New Mangalore Port beefs up ERP platform

In one month's time, all the work processes in New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) will be integrated on an ERP platform. It will appear as a unified software to the user, said Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT. Integration and testing of the software is currently going on and a “go-live” review took place during the week, he said, speaking to The Hindu on Wednesday in the port.
The software, being implemented by TCS, encompasses the port's traffic, operations, finance, real estate and human resources functions. Data on port operations such as vessels entering, berthing, and leaving the port, loading and unloading of cargo and sailing on, is now an entirely electronic process. It can now be done in one hour's time.
The software will show usage by cargo of the 80 acres of real estate in the port. It will include the type of cargo, to whom it was allotted, when and at what rate, he said. It will also show roads, drains, side drains, location of lights, powerlines, water lines.
TCS was selected from an open tender process. For one year, a team of 30 people from TCS have been with the port to see how the port operations can be mapped in the software, he said. While the software does not make the port "paperless", it makes the port use "less paper". For instance, billing operations related to charges from vessels had to be filed in triplicate by the traffic manager in the port. Now, it is done entirely online. Before digitisation of operations, integration of the various functions in the port was missing. “There were pockets of non-IT operations earlier," said Mr. Tamilvanan.
The ERP integration cost Rs. 11 crore, including cost of maintenance for five years.
Once the software goes live, the port gets a one-year warranty for the software and support for five years. TCS will provide a helpdesk for functional problems and troubleshooting. During the five years of support, help may not be physically present at the port but will respond whenever required.
